Great job Nashua!

From the Bernie & Phyl's Customer Service Team:

I just want to drop a note to say that I've had the most pleasant
experience in buying a furniture set in your Nashua store.

I dealt with Mr. Willis briefly and he was absolutely charming. I was taken care of by a young man named Will. There was no question I asked that he didn't have an answer; he was forthcoming with suggestions when I asked and was very knowledgeable about inventory when I wanted to match tables, etc. I do know that I shall never go to another place for furniture again. I have
told more than one person already about my experience and will insist all my children shop first at Bernie and Phyl's in Nashua because I know they will find exactly what they're looking for. Quality is right, I went to a few stores before this and was disappointed in the quality of the workmanship. My experience at this store was unbeatable from start to finish. I don't want
to forget the young lady that helped me at the end when I paid for my furniture. She was so kind, calm and very pleasant.

Thank you... I'm very excited about my furniture and so is my family.

Very truly yours,
Carlotta R.

A nice letter

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;

I JUST WANTED TO LET SOMEBODY KNOW WHAT A PLEASURE IT WAS DOING BUSINESS WITH YOU. I WENT TO YOUR WESTBORO STORE LAST WEEKEND "JUST LOOKING" AND PRICING SLEEP SOFAS. AFTER POKING AROUND FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES OR SO, I WAS APPROACHED BY KELLI. SHE WAS A GREAT HELP. SHE EXPLAINED ALL THE OPTIONS FULLY AND INTRODUCED ME TO THE "KLIK KLAK"SOFAS. EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! AS INDECISIVE AS I AM.. KELLI WAS VERY PATIENT. THE STYLE GOES WELL WITH IKEA
PRODUCTS. DELIVERY WAS SLIGHTLY LATE, BUT I WAS GLAD TO SEE THE MEN SET UP MY NEW PURCHASE ALSO. THANKS AGAIN

SINCERELY,

TODD D.

Great job Nashua!

From Bernie & Phyl's Customer Service Group:

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to take a moment to comment on the excellent service my wife and I received during our recent purchase of a mattress at your Nashua Showroom. We were assisted by Ms. Linda Baker, one of your staff at the Nashua location. We were very impressed with her knowledge of the product line and her patient effort to match our needs with an appropriate product. Throughout the experience she made herself available to answer our questions, but also backed
off to give us ample time to test a variety of products on our own.

We were treated with respect by this knowledgable young lady, who obviously was enthused about her job and dedicated to offering good service. She was welcoming and displayed an excellent sense of humor, even laughing at this retiree's corny jokes. How nice that today she followed up the sale with a thoughtful notecard!

Bernie & Phyl's is fortunate to be represented by such a professional and enthusiastic salesperson. Please commend Linda on our behalf! We look forward to the receipt of our mattress next week.

Sincerely,

Kevin J.

Generation Next: The New Faces of Bernie & Phyl's

NORTON - You’re probably familiar with Bernie and Phyl. Now it’s time to get to know Larry and Rob. Bernie and Phyllis Rubin, the founders of the Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture chain and the company’s longtime pitchpersons, are stepping away from the spotlight after nearly a quarter-century. Their sons, both Sharon residents who have had key roles running the company for decades, are ready to step to the forefront.

“We’re not looking at eliminating Bernie and Phyl totally out of the picture,” said Larry Rubin, 48, who has had the title of CEO for more than two years. “It’s just the normal transition to the next generation.”
The brothers grew up in Randolph and Weymouth and helped their father run a small trucking company, delivering furniture for Scott Gordon Furniture in Quincy. After the furniture store went out of business, Bernie Rubin decided to get into the retail side of the industry himself. In 1983, he opened the first Bernie & Phyl’s store in Quincy before relocating to a former shoe factory in Weymouth.

Bernie & Phyl’s has since expanded to six stores in Massachusetts and New Hampshire with annual sales topping $100 million, enough to rank it among the top 100 furniture retailers in the U.S. The company has more than 400 employees at its stores and at its headquarters and distribution center in Norton.

It recently acquired a 12,000-square-foot former La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery in Hyannis that is scheduled to reopen as Bernie & Phyl’s first Cape Cod store by the end of June.

Talking about their roles in the company in an interview, the two brothers sometimes finished each other’s sentences or blurted out phrases in unison, a reflection of their chummy family ties and long professional association.

Rob Rubin, who joined the company in 1985 shortly after graduating from Syracuse University, is vice president of marketing and merchandising.
After an initial career as an electrical engineer, Larry came aboard in his early 30s.

“I really wanted to control my own destiny and be part of an entity that I could really have an impact and control what happens,” he said. “When you’re an engineer working for somebody else, I would not have many of those controls.”

After Larry joined the company, Bernie & Phyl’s adopted a more ambitious retail strategy, opening larger “superstores” where furniture was sold in a showroom setting with accessories.

Rob is responsible for buying decisions and keeping up with consumer trends.

“The days of the formal living room or dining room (are passing),” he said. “It’s getting away from that more into the casual lifestyle today with the way everybody’s busy these days and multitasking.”

Less free time also means more demand for low-maintenance fabrics like microfiber and leather, he said.

The chain is perhaps best-known for the familiar “Quality, Comfort and Price (That’s Nice!)” jingle that it has used in its TV commercials since the 1990s. The jazzy riff was written by Open Skye Design, a Winchester-based ad agency.

Over the years, the Rubins appeared in many ads alongside local sports stars such as former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri.
So infectious is the jingle that a group of travelers once serenaded Bernie Rubin with an off-key version after recognizing him at Los Angeles International Airport.

In addition to using Larry and Rob Rubin in recent TV spots, Bernie & Phyl’s is inviting the public to get involved. On March 15, more than 1,000 families showed up at a “casting call” at the Braintree store to audition their children to sing the jingle in a future Bernie & Phyl’s commercial.
The new ads are designed to appeal to female customers who wield much influence over furniture-buying decisions, Larry Rubin said. Further person-on-the-street ads are in the works.

Larry Rubin said his business strategy continues to be guided by the advice of his father, who just turned 70 and has stepped back from his day-to-day involvement in the business.

“My dad always says that a business can’t stand still,” he said. “You’re either going to go up or go down, and we always wanted to go forward and grow. We never want to stand still.”

Hi
Bernie&Phyl,

I had the pleasure of meeting you and your lovly wife
and youngest son the day you held the first casting call
in Braintree.

My 9-year old daughter came for the casting call we
were number "31" in line,,this is the first time I had
visited your store... how impressive... very nice quality furniture!!!!!

I think your family is fantastic!! really true New Englanders :)
Accent and everything, you know I have the same accent lol

I grew up in a small town Rockland, but Presently Live in Hanover.
I truly think that your furniture chain is the "Best"!! and I'll tell you why.

Today, I did some comparison shopping,my 9-year old i spoke about
needs a new bedroom set,we are relocating here in the same town, she
has outgrown her daybed etc. so i went to "Sleepy's" then "Mattress Discounters" then Finally your store in Braintree... well needless to say... it was your store I went with:):)

We were able to get a nice full size box spring and mattress "Coconut Grove" then the Headboard, frame and even a dresser on Clearence, I think we saved alot

Best of all, is the very Lovely smart intellegent sales girl who helped us tremendously her name is "Susan" she knows her stuff i'll tell you that!!!!

If an employee could get an award it should be her...

She really went out of her way to be very informative about the different styles of Mattresses, and quality etc.

So, I guess I just want to commend her and your quality business to all of us New Englanders.

Sincerely, Pamela J. & Richard U.

Great job Bart!

Dear Bernie & Phyl,

I must relate the most pleasant experience I've had in a long time. I purchased a rocker/recliner over the weekend and found I had made in error in selecting the fabric.

I called the Saugus store this morning and after speaking to Bart, the problem was rectified quickly. I went to the store this afternoon and Bart took care of the matter immediately and efficiently. You are to be commended for putting such a thoughtful and efficient person in charge of your store. He certainly is
a benefit to your company.

I have no qualms in recommending your store and especially to deal with this fine gentleman if possible. Thank you again for seeing the true potential in this man, it is a reflection of your caring for the people you serve.

Respectfully,
Phyllis F.
